A world-building design exercise to create a tabletop role playing game. This project involved photo manipulation, creation of a complex instruction book, digital illustrations and content and character creation.
This university project was the main piece of assessment for the subject Interactive Narrative Design, a second year QUT design subject. The aim of the project was to create a fictional world and narrative within it, as well as a set of rules, characters (both NPC and playable), tools, and launch points where you can 'pick up and play' the developed world in a type of 'choose your own adventure' style of game. The first half of this subject was a group assignment. My role within the group was to create digital assets where I utilised photographs I had taken throughout Japan and manipulated them to include various characters within our story. I was also in charge of the digital storybook layout, design and creation, style guide and cover art. A secondary individual assignment was also produced where I created many digital illustrations to introduce new characters and plot lines. Having not played a tabletop role playing game prior to taking this subject, I found the content both challenging and unfamiliar, however felt a huge sense of accomplishment upon completing, scoring a high distinction on both the group and individual components and having our project used as an example for following students. Main tools used for this project were InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
